Yarn Ideas
Freeport calls for aran/bulky-weight yarn. In the photo above (and in the pattern), I used Quince & Co Osprey. Below are just a few other yarn ideas that would work well for this design:
- Cascade Ecological Wool or Eco+
- Sandness Garn Fritidsgarn
- Berroco Ultra Wool Chunky
- Berroco Mercado
- Brown Sheep Lamb’s Pride Bulky
- Kelbourne Woolens Germantown Bulky
- The Fibre Company &Make Aran
Elizabeth Zimmermann Phony Seam Technique
I learned about this neat technique in Elizabeth Zimmermann’s book “Knitting Without Tears”. It creates a seam-like fold at the sides of a bottom-up garment – it helps to provide structure and is quite clever! In Freeport, you don’t have to work this technique but if you would like to give it a try, check out my photo tutorial here.
Picking-up Stitches for Front Bands
If you are new to picking-up stitches along a garment edge, you can check out my tutorial below. It’s for a cardigan design, but the concept and technique is still the same.
Working Short Rows for Shawl Collar
The shawl collar is created by working wrap and turn short rows around the back of the neck. To learn more about this technique, check out my page here. This page also includes video lessons on how to work wrap and turn short rows.
