On The Horizon

Is it a scarf? Is it a cowl? It’s both! On the Horizon is an simple and satisfying project that takes a slightly different twist on the traditional cowl. And a great way to use up leftover/stash yarn too!

It’s knit lengthwise (working back and forth on a long circular needle), and features 3 different sections of stripes using 3 different colors to create a gradient affect (or whatever combination you like!). Once complete, stitches are picked up on either end to create button bands.

The finished piece looks like a scarf (and can be worn that way too if you prefer), but you can also wrap it around your neck and then button to secure in place to wear as a cowl.

Finished Size: Flat, unbuttoned: approx 49”/124 cm long x 10”/25 cm depth, after blocking.

Gauge: 18 sts & 34 rows = 4”/10 cm in garter ridge st pattern after blocking.
Stitch gauge is more important than row gauge in this pattern. Exact gauge is not critical but it will affect your finished measurements and yarn usage.

Yarn:
Worsted-weight yarn, broken down as follows:

  • Main Color (MC): approx 380 yds.
  • Contrasting Color 1 (CC1): approx 60 yds.
  • Contrasting Color 2 (CC2): approx 60 yds.
  • Contrasting Color 3 (CC3): approx 60 yds.

Needles & Other Supplies:

  • US 8/5 mm 32”/80 cm circ, or size needed to obtain gauge.
  • For side ribbing: US 7/4.5 mm 24”/60 cm circ, or 1 size smaller than that used to obtain gauge.
  • 4 locking stitch markers.
  • 4 buttons, approx 3/4”
