Brightside Cowl

Brightside is an easy striped cowl that is knit up like a scarf but then joined together using the Three Needle Bind-Off Technique to make it a cowl! However, you can leave it as a scarf if you prefer.

Pattern includes link to a tips page that provides technique tutorials and tips for making your own Brightside, including modifications you can make (such as: adding an icord edge, using a different weight yarn, and using the color wheel to help you pick your colors).

Finished Size: approx 6.5 x 48”/17 x 122 cm

Yarn/Yardage:6 colors of Bulky-weight yarn, shown in Vintage Chunky by Berroco (52% Acrylic, 40% Wool, 8% Nylon; 100g = 136 yds), broken down as follows:

  • 1 Main Color (MC): 110 yds, 1 skein, shown in color Oats.
  • 5 Contrasting Colors (CC): each 25 yds, 1 skein, shown in the following colors: CC1: 25 yds, 1 skein, shown in Sunny (yellow)
    • CC1: Sunny
    • CC2: Dewberry
    • CC3: Pumpkin
    • CC4: Chocolate
    • CC5: Neptune
Gauge: 15 sts & 27 rows = 4”/10 cm in Garter St

Needles & Supplies:

  • US 10/6 mm needles (either straight or a 24”/60 cm circ), or size needed to obtain gauge.
  • For Three Needle Bind-Off: 1 extra US 10/6 mm needle, or size used to obtain gauge.
  • For Picking-Up Cast-On Edge: Spare needle, in size US 4/3.5 mm or smaller.
  • Tapestry needle to weave in ends.

Construction: 

  • Cowl is knit flat like a scarf. At the end, stitches are picked up along cast-on edge and the three needle bind-off is worked to attach ends together. But you can opt to leave it as a scarf if you prefer!
