Working Back Underarm of Cruel Summer

In my Cruel Summer cardi, on page 5 in the “Back” section, you are instructed to transfer the Back sts from scrap yarn to your circular needle. Then, instead of cable casting-on your sleeve stitches like you did for each Front, you’ll be instructed to pick up into the base of the Front’s sleeve cast-on stitches. These are steps 1-9 you see in the pattern. Below are photos that help illustrate these steps in better detail:

Here are the Front sleeve underarm stitches that you will be picking up into on the right side:

Step 1: With RS of work facing you, insert needle tip into base of first underarm CO st from Right Front and pick up and knit it:

Step 2: Then pick up and knit into remaining 15 Left Front underarm CO sts in the same manner:

Step 3: Create a m1 in the gap between these sts just picked up and the Back sts on the LN…

…by inserting LN tip into strand between needles from back to front, and then knit into front of it with RN (1 st inc’d):

Step 4: Then insert left needle into 2nd-st-in on RN tip…

…and lift it up and over the new st just created (1 st dec’d).

Step 5: Then knit across Back sts to end. Do not turn work:

Step 6: Create another m1 in gap between Back sts and Left Front by inserting LN into strand from back to front…

…then knit into the front of this st (1 st inc’d):

Step 7: Pick up and knit first st from Left Front underarm CO sts (note: you can use the left needle to pick up this stitch if it’s easier):

Step 8: Insert left needle into 2nd-st-in on RN tip and lift it up and over the st just worked (1 st dec’d).

Step 9: Then pick up and knit into remaining 15 Left Front underarm CO sts:

Note: Don’t worry if you have little holes at each corner – these can easily be cinched up when weaving in ends.
